About
The Institute for Sharknado Studies at the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences at Stony Brook University is a playful way to showcase the research and expertise of the University by relating it to the #Sharknado film series.
SoMAS is well positioned to speak to the issues of sharks and extreme weather.
- SoMAS maintains a network of weather and marine monitoring stations, capturing a record of air and water temperature, water quality (including harmful algal blooms) and tide measurements
- A variety of remote cameras capture the daily weather across Long Island.
- Our Storm Surge Research Group has created a model that predicts storm surge on the Eastern Seaboard
- In a collaboration with Brookhaven National Laboratory, a new network of radar equipment that is both stationed at Stony Brook University and mounted on vehicles for mobile access will provided additional access to aerial data.
- The National Weather Service for New York, NY works with scientists and students. NWS forecasters teach Stony Brook classes.
