Touring Humanities, Life Science, and SBS!

Good day friends! It has been spring for so long already why is it still so cold outside!?

Today we had walking tour for the sinc sites surrounding javits. First we went to Humanities SINC Site, then Life Sciences, and ended in SBS (Social Behavioral Sciences) where Nam held a Sparky workshop for us. I have never been to the Humanities SINC site before so that was new to me.

Nam helped us link our webpages created on sparky and translate that information, along with some coding techniques to create a unique webpage. Although I had a problem where the webspace was not created for my account, I watched Nam show us on the projector. I wasn’t as confused even though I couldn’t follow along because during shadowing, Parth had taught me to do something very similar with creating a webspace with mysbfiles, and the formatting of coding were basically the same. Nam also showed us dreamworks and how it is a more user friendly way of coding.

This week in shadowing the senior consultants that I shadowed let me act as a real Sr. Con. It was different being “in command” and the task seemed intimidating because I felt that I had a lot of responsibilities to uphold. However, it was relieving to know that if I had any problem, they were there to support me.

While shadowing Danny, a user had a problem concerning print from anywhere on his Mac. Even though he properly installed all the software for the latest system, it wasn’t allowing him to print. It was troubling because he said he had no problems prior to this and it worked before. Danny and I called Nam over to help us since he was much more knowledgeable about mac systems than we were. We tried re-installing the program again, and when that didn’t work, Nam and I tried to install each package individually. However that didn’t work either and we were both stumped for a while. However, Nam noticed that the user was connected to WolfieNet Guest wifi, and after switching to the secure network, the program worked. I thought that was interesting and Nam informed me that sometimes the connection within Main is not that good, so the users are often using the Guest network unknowingly. I thought that was an interesting point.

This week I also asked the Sr. Cons personally what they thought about the pros and cons concerning the positions they were in, in terms of Help Desk or Site Manager. I’ve been trying to decide which position I would want to work in and I was having a hard time deciding. After talking it out with several Sr. Cons over the course of this week I feel that I might be leaning towards Help Desk, but I feel that being a Site Manager would be more beneficial to me in the future in terms of management. However, either position would give me different skill sets that both would be much needed in the future later on. I guess I’ll continue to act as the Sr. Con during shadowing to see which position I’m more comfortable in!
