Photoville NYC

Photoville NYC Events

I attended the Photoville Exhibit that took place inĀ  The Bronx’s very own Van Cortlandt Park on Wednesday, October 7. The exhibit sponsored by ICP included numerous works of young teens and preteen’s work which seemed to be focused on the pandemic era through the eyes of young New Yorkers. Appropriately titled “Eyes of Hope”, they showcased various images that displayed exactly what the youth of today’s experience with the pandemic is like: dark but with hints of colors. The color scheme and a lot of the images are static. For one, a photo by Jenny Escamilla shows the feet of a couple passing by, their bodies off the frame, and their shadows following them. To me, it gives me the message that says keep moving forward: the New York way.

All in all, seeing the works of young teens is extremely inspiring and it makes me reminisce a lot of my own personal experience with photography. It even inspired a lot of my work that I am doing now. It reminds me of how lucky I am to live in a city where I had the privilege to have access to programs where I can express myself with photography as early as the age of 12 like a lot of these kids. It also made me realize how different it must be for them, in the midst of a life-changing global catastrophe. This is concerning photography at its finest example.
