Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder is a mental illness characterized by extreme shifts in mood. Symptoms include mania and also include episodes of depression. Depression caused by bipolar disorder lasts at least two weeks and symptoms include extreme sadness, withdrawal, changes in appetite, fatigue, and even suicidal ideation. A high (manic) episode can last for several days or weeks and these symptoms include feeling euphoric, grandiosity, insomnia, feeling restlessness, and impulsive behavior.  Some people will experience episodes of changes in mood several times a year, while others may experience them only rarely.
