Final project: He & She

Essay:

Sometimes you would find some interesting facts of genders. For example, when most of men go out, they can only bring a wallet but most of women always bring a handbag. Most of women always think they need one more cloth to dress up, but most of men can live with several pieces clothes. In this project, I got some ideas from my narrative project, I collected some typical articles as symbols. I took photographs for them and put those photos together. I want to show those interesting differences between men and women by those compares.

project 5 portraiture

Calmness(self portraits)

Impression(friends)

Bashfulness(strangers)

As a portrait photographer, it is important to find your models’ characteristics and consider about what they think about your photographs. I asked some friends and strangers as a model for me, someone rejected that because they think they are not good-looking enough before the shot. What photographers should do is communicate with them patiently and help them build their confidences by your artworks.

Lee Friedlander, Madison, Wisconsin, 1966,gelatin-silver print, 11 x 14 inches

Lee Friedlander, New York City, 1966 gelatin-silver print, 11 x 14 inches

Lee took him self portraits from an interesting angle. There isn’t any shot on his body but only his shadow. However, it still show his strong personalites.

Vivian Maier, Self Portrait, 1960.

The composition of this photo is perfect.

Vivian Maier, Self-Portrait; October 18, 1953, New York, NY

I like the light and shadow contrast in this photo. They divided her body and showed a special visual experience.

project 4 Red rose and White rose

My project is a story about two roses.  I use the roses as a symbol of women to show the relationship between men and women.

Every man has such two women in his life.

One is passion, sexy as a red rose.

The other is pure, soft as a white rose.

Once he owned the white rose, he will miss the red rose which beautiful as the sunset.

If he owned the red rose, the white rose will become the moonlight before his bed.

Neither the red rose, nor white rose could be everlasting, roses only could exist in mens’ fancies.

Research of project 4

My favorite modern poem “Farewell Again, Cambridge ”was written by Zhimo Xu, an early 20th century Chinese poet. The poem is below:

轻轻的我走了,

正如我轻轻的来;

是夕阳中的新娘;

油油的在水底招摇;

是天上虹;

向青草更青处漫溯;

悄悄是别离的笙箫;

正如我悄悄的来;

Very quietly I take my leave
As quietly as I came here;
Quietly I wave good-bye
To the rosy clouds in the western sky.
The golden willows by the riverside
Are young brides in the setting sun;
Their reflections on the shimmering waves
Always linger in the depth of my heart.
The floating heart growing the sludge
Sways leisurely under the water;
In the gentle waves of Cambridge
I would be a water plant!
That pool under the shade of elm trees
Holds not water but the rainbow from the sky;
Shattered to pieces among the duck weeds
Is the sediment of a rainbow-like dream?
To seek a dream?
Just to pole a boat upstream
To where the green grass is more verdant
Or to have the boat fully loaded with starlight
And sing aloud in the splendor of starlight.
But I can’t sing aloud
Quietness is my farewell music;
Even summer insects heap silence for me
Silent is Cambridge tonight!
Very quietly I left
As quietly as I came here;
Gently I flick my sleeves
Not even a wisp of cloud will I bring away.

This poem told a story about farewell.  I want take a series photographs which emphasis the environment, include some details of insects, water plants, cloud etc. The color of those photographs wouldn’t be so bright to show the sadness of leave.The size of objects will be more and more small to show a feeling of leave.

project 3 The Depressive Disorder

My topic is about people who is suffering from depression.  The depression is an emotional thing rather than visual. Therefore I used photoshop to give most of my photographs a double exposure effect, to show what the depression patients’ inner world and how depression impact them from visual.

Touch from another angle

Me. Me?

Sometimes they would question about who are they and why they live. They can’t find their personal value at all and self-denial again and again.

From finger to heart

Do not enter

Their heart is a jail, they locked themselves there. They reject others to visit and torment themselves there.

World of others

Depression patients always have a personal world. It always different from our normal world. Maybe it cloudy all days, maybe it can’t stop raining.
