The Stony Brook Sociology Graduate Student Conference continues a decade-long tradition of providing opportunities for graduate students to present their work and network with a community of scholars and peers. This year’s conference focuses on changes in the field, new and novel research design and topics, and the idea of challenging paradigms. We encourage presentations from a variety of methodological and theoretical approaches.
Social change occurs both inside and outside of academia. These social changes often inform one another. Transformative sociology encompasses new ways of interrogating old questions as well as answers new questions using established theories and methods. By transforming sociology and analyzing shifts in society, sociology and other social sciences can challenge extant paradigms and advance social scientific knowledge.
Highlighting key areas in sociology and related disciplines, the conference welcomes studies in social change, including, but not limited to, the following sub-fields or any combination of these sub-fields:
- Gender and Sexuality
- Race/Ethnicity
- Social Movements
- Globalization/Development
- Environment/Climate
- Human Rights, Law, and Crime
- Organizations and Work
- State, Community, and Power
We look forward to hearing from scholars from a variety of academic traditions and modes of inquiry. Please send title, abstract (300 words or less), at least 3 keywords, department/university affiliation, and your preference for sub-field to sbsocgradconf@gmail.com. The deadline to submit is December 21, 2017.
