Honorees Cited for Outstanding Achievement in Chosen Fields

STONY BROOK, N.Y., March 27, 2003—The State University of New York Board of Trustees have appointed 10 members of the SUNY faculty to the rank of Distinguished Professor and one member of the SUNY faculty to the rank of Distinguished Librarian. Eight of the faculty members who were honored are from Stony Brook University.

“It is with great pleasure that the Board of Trustees appoints to the rank of Distinguished Professor and Distinguished Librarian these esteemed faculty members who have achieved national and international prominence and an outstanding reputation within their chosen fields,” said State University Board of Trustees Chairman Thomas F. Egan.

“These preeminent faculty members have earned the rank of Distinguished Professor and Distinguished Librarian through their significant contributions to research and their dedication to the University as scholars, educators and mentors, setting the highest academic standards for the entire University community,” said SUNY Chancellor Robert L. King.

The Stony Brook faculty honored were:

Fu-Pen Chiang—Director of the Laboratory for Experimental Mechanics Research and Chair of the Mechanical Engineering and one of the world’s experts in the field of experimental solid mechanics, especially in the area of stress and strain analysis.

Lorne M. Golub—Department of Oral Biology and Pathology and Associate Dean for Research and Faculty Development in the School of Dental Medicine, and one of the leading researchers in periodontitis in the world.

Arthur Patrick Grollman—Evelyn G. Glick Professor of Experimental Medicine and Professor of Medicine in the Department of Pharmacological, one of the most eminent cancer researchers in the world.

Cindy Lee—Marine Sciences Research, one of the most important researchers currently working the field of marine organic geochemistry. She is widely recognized as one of the world’s leading authorities in oceanic carbon cycling, a topic central to the understanding of global climate change.

Serge Luryi—Chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer, one of the most influential scientists working today in the field of semiconductor electronics and photonics. Professor Luryi also serves as Director of the New York State Center for Advanced Technology in Sensor Systems.

Barry M. McCoy—Institute for Theoretical and one of the most internationally respected and renowned scientists in mathematical physics and statistical mechanics. His discoveries have had wide impact ranging from pure mathematics to condensed matter physics.
Edward V. Shuryak—Director of the Institute for Nuclear Theory of the Department of Physics and Astronomy, who is one of the very best nuclear physicists in the world. His work has profoundly changed the field.

Rolf Sternglanz—Department of Biochemistry and Cell Biology is an internationally renowned expert in genetics, molecular biology and biochemistry whose research has profoundly transformed the understanding of some of the most important fields of biochemistry and cell biology.

“The work of these Distinguished Professors and this Distinguished Librarian is of such character that their presence tends to elevate the standards of scholarship of colleagues both within and beyond their academic fields,” said State University Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Programs Peter Salins, Ph.D. “It is of such quality that students and scholars on other campuses of the State University could and would wish to benefit by lectures and seminars or other appropriate presentations these faculty members might bring to them.”

To be eligible for appointment, a candidate must have attained the rank of Full Librarian, and must have completed at least five years of full-time service at that rank on the nominating campus and at least ten years of service within the State University of New York.
