Stony Brook University Leading Incubator of High School Talent In New York, As Well As Nation
STONY BROOK, N.Y., January 21, 2009 — Twenty-five high school students who worked with Stony Brook University faculty and in Stony Brook laboratories were selected as semifinalists in the Intel Science Talent Search, the prestigious nationwide research competition. The 25 students represent almost 8 percent of the 300 Intel semifinalists nationwide, making Stony Brook perhaps the largest incubator of Intel talent in the country. On Long Island, this number translates into an unprecedented 42 per cent of the 59 Intel semifinalists.
The compelling numbers reinforced Stony Brook’s reputation in developing the research talents of exceptional high school students. Indeed, over the past seven years Stony Brook University has served as the host research university for approximately 217 students.
The students were mentored by Stony Brook faculty from departments throughout the campus, including Anesthesiology, Biochemistry & Cell Biology, Biomedical Engineering, Cardiology, Chemistry, Electrical Engineering, Geosciences, Marine & Atmospheric Sciences, Materials Science & Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Medicine (Endocrinology), Pharmacological Sciences, Physics & Astronomy, and Psychology.

Peter Gergen, Dr. Luis Gruberg, Dr. Greg Hajcak, Dr. William Holt, Dr. Benjamin Hsiao, Dr. Irwin Kurland, Dr. James Lattimer, Dr. Wei Lin, Dr. John Noé, Dr. Iwao Ojima, Dr. Gustavo Palacios, Dr. Yixian Qin, Dr. Miriam Rafailovich, Dr. E. Troy Rasbury, Dr. Carlos Simmerling, Dr. Helio Takai, Dr. Peter Tonge, and Dr. Lin-Shu Wang.
Ten of the Intel semifinalists from Ward Melville High School were mentored at Stony Brook including: David Gittin (mentored by Dr. J. Peter Gergen of Biochemistry and Cell Biology); Michael Gurevitch (mentored by Dr. James Dilger of Anesthesiology); Jason Karelis (mentored by Dr. Peter Tonge of Chemistry); Amy Lin (mentored by Dr. Luis Gruberg of Cardiology); Jie Min (mentored by Drs. Irwin Kurland and Gustavo Palacios of Medicine/Endocrinology); Naureen Osman (mentored by Dr. Greg Hajcak of Psychology); Taejoong Park (mentored by Dr. Lin-Shu Wang of Mechanical Engineering); Preya Shah (mentored by Dr. Iwao Ojima of Chemistry); Christine Shrock (mentored by Dr. Carlos Simmerling of Chemistry); Yuanchi Zhao (mentored by Dr. John Noe of Physics & Astronomy). Eight students participated in the Simons Summer Research program sponsored by the Simons Foundation.
