On the morning of Friday May 22, SoMAS hosted a convocation ceremony to honor and celebrate the accomplishments of graduating students.

The SoMAS undergraduate program continues to grow and this spring more than forty undergraduates earned a bachelor’s degree in one of the SoMAS majors. SoMAS also awarded eleven master’s degrees and ten doctorates in Marine and Atmospheric Sciences.
The Petra M. Udelhofen Memorial Scholarship, an annual cash award to an undergraduate entering his or her senior year of study in a SoMAS program, was awarded to Brandilyn Peters.
At the ceremony, SoMAS Dean Dr. David Conover spoke to graduating students about the importance of “thinking outside the box.”
“In school you acquire knowledge, you learn how to make and test hypotheses, and how to assimilate and synthesize data. But we hope you will use your education and training to go beyond the boundaries of knowledge. Breakthroughs come when you imagine what others have failed to see,” said Dr. Conover. “We hope you will go off into the world and do great things!”
Members of SoMAS were also honored by the greater Stony Brook University community this week at the The Graduate School’s Annual Awards Ceremony. SoMAS graduate student Tara Duffy was awarded the Madeline Fusco Fellowship, and the Dean’s Award for Excellence in Service to Graduate Education by a Graduate Program was bestowed on Dr. Anne McElroy.
