Professor Marvin Geller will be attending the SPARC Scientific Steering Group in Pune, India from January 31 to February 4. Last week, Professor Marat Khairoutdinov presented a series of lectures on various topics at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology in Pune, India, and collaborated with members of the Institute on improving their model for the seasonal forecast of Indian Monsoon. Student News Congratulations to Intel Semifinalists, Joshua Cohen from John F. Kennedy High School in Bellmore and Wendi Oppenheim from Pine Crest School in Ft. Lauderdale. Joshua was mentored by Professor Josie Aller on his project, “Atmospheric Properties of Biogenic Aerosols Produced by Mangroves,” and Wendi was mentored by Professor Bruce Brownawell on her project, “Out of Sight, Out of Mind: The Effects of Dispersants and their Surfactants on Cyprinodon Variegatus Embryos.” Professors Aller and Brownawell, along with 30 other mentors from Stony Brook University, produced 32 Intel Semifinalists. During January of 2011, the three presenters and Eric Schultz of the University of Connecticut traveled to the East African countries of Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania to discuss the potential for collaborative research focused on Lake Victoria, the second largest lake in the world. Research areas of interest include effects of climate change on ecosystem services, trophic cascades, conservation, groundwater, invasive species, and human disease. This seminar will describe preparations, logistics, institutions visited, scientists met with, technology, facilities, local culture, promising areas of collaboration in atmospheric and aquatic research, and potential sources of funding. Professor Hameed will also serve as Acting Associate Dean of Atmospheric Sciences until a SoMAS Dean is selected. Professor Edmund Chang has been invited to Germany by the German Predictability and Dynamics of Weather Systems in the Atlantic-European Sector (PANDOWAE) Project to exchange ideas on research aiming to improve forecasts of high impact weather events. During this visit over the next two weeks, he will present seminars at the University of Rostock, the University of Mainz, and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. From March 28 to April 1, Professor Brian Colle will be attending the 15th Annual Cyclone Workshop in Monterey, CA and will present a talk entitled, “A Climatology of Rossby Wave Packets.” Assistant Professor Michael Frisk is a candidate for tenure and promotion to the rank of Associate Profesor. On Wednesday, May 18, Dr. Andy Vogelmann of the Environmental Sciences Department at Brookhaven National Labortory will present the 469th Brookhaven Lecture, entitled, “The Skinny on Thin Clouds.” All are invited to attend this free talk, which is open to the public and will be held in Berkner Hall at 4:00 p.m. Refreshments will be offered before and after the lecture. Visitors to the Lab ages 16 and older must carry a photo ID while on site.
