The Institute for Terrestrial and Planetary Atmospheres (ITPA) invites a distinguished scholar each year to present a seminar to honor the contributions of Distinguished Professor Emeritus Robert D. Cess to the development of atmospheric sciences at Stony Brook University. Dr. John Michael Wallace is the Distinguished Cess Lecturer for 2013.
Dr. Wallace is a professor of Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Washington, as well as the former director of the Joint Institute for the Study of the Atmosphere and Ocean (JISAO)–a joint research venture between the University of Washington and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). He is also the coauthor with Peter V. Hobbs of the standard textbook:Atmospheric Science: An Introductory Survey. He was the third most cited geoscientist during the period 1973-2007.
Professor Mike Wallace is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, a Foreign member of the Russian Academy of Sciences and a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
