Faculty News
All are welcome to attend a special seminar and open house, “Running the Wrong Way: Chasing Tornadoes and Hurricanes for Science,” by Drs. Joshua Wurman and Karen Kosiba from the Center for Severe Weather Research, Boulder, CO. This seminar will take place on Monday, June 17, at 7:30 p.m. at the Wang Center auditorium. Open house begins at 6:00 p.m. where the Doppler on Wheels Radar (DOW) will be on display for the DREAMS (Doppler Radar for Education and Mesoscale Studies) experiment to study storms, sea breezes and other weather phenomena. On May 8-9, Professor Hyemi Kim attended the 2nd KIOST-US Joint Symposium on Climate and Ocean at Columbia University. From May 14 to June 10, she will be attending the kick-off meeting for a project entitled, “Improvement of Seasonal Prediction with Land Surface Initialization,” at the APEC Climate Center in Pusan, South Korea. She will also be making a presentation and participating in discussions regarding the seasonal tropical cyclone prediction system.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration Office of Education is accepting proposals in response to the Education Opportunities in NASA STEM (EONS) 2013-14 NASA Research Announcement. This new announcement is an umbrella announcement for opportunities under the Minority University Research and Education Program (MUREP), and includes calls for proposals in the following program elements for Fiscal Year 2013: NASA Innovations in Climate

Message from Professor Anne McElroy to Ph.D. Students:
This message is to remind you that all Ph.D. students are required to advance to candidacy before the beginning of their fourth year of study. This means that any of you who started prior to Fall 2010 are now late, and that those of you who started in Fall 2010 should advance prior to beginning of the Fall 2013 semester. According to Carol’s records there are many Ph.D. students who fall into one of these two categories . Prior to advancing SoMAS pays student tuition from our tuition scholarship pool. After you advance the Graduate School pays your tuition. Please note that the Graduate School is no longer just providing us with as much tuition scholarship money as we need. Thus, it is imparitive that Ph.D. students advance on time. Failure to do so, puts you at risk for losing your tuition scholarship which means you could end up paying thousands of dollars for tuition next fall. If you are already late to advance, or scheduled to advance before fall, PLEASE discuss this with your advisor immediately, and have them contact Carol with a proposed date (month is OK) for your proposal defense. We have to put in our request for tuition funds for next fall by May 15, so need to hear back from everyone in this category before then. This is VERY important.
Follow-Up Message from Professor Anne McElroy:
Someone pointed out an important point I neglected to tell you. Ph.D. students cannot defend until 12 months after they advance to candidacy. Even if we didn’t have tuition constraints, postponing advancement can delay graduation, not to mention by postponing you miss out of getting valuable advice from your dissertation committee soon enough that it can be valuable to you. Also, I didn’t mean to imply that you need to formally schedule your proposal exam right now, merely that we need a pretty firm number of how many students will be advancing by fall 2013 so we can request the correct amount of tuition scholarship funds. We have to make this request by May 15th, which is why we need your approximate date of proposal defense now.

Message from Professor Sultan Hameed
ITPA organizes the Robert de Zafra Symposium each year to create an opportunity for our graduate students to report progress in their research projects in the past year, and for the faculty to appraise the progress and give feedback. The 2013 Symposium will be held on Friday, May 10, in Endeavour Hall 120. All ITPA students, except first year students, are required to make presentations at the symposium. The first year students are required to attend the symposium. Each presentation will be for 15 minutes, with a 5 minute follow up for discussion. Consult with your adviser and prepare your talk to focus on what you have done in the past year and what you plan to do next. Avoid lengthy background information. Please send the title of your presentation to Gina Gartin (gina.gartin@stonybrook.edu) by 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 7 .Upload your powerpoint file on the computer in Endeavour 120 in the folder, “deZafra Symposium,” before the start of the symposium at 9:00 a.m.

Professor Marvin Geller will be in Bern, Switzerland from April 6-13 to attend an International Space Science Institute (ISSI) workshop on Atmospheric Gravity Waves in Global Climate Prediction and Weather Forecasting Applications. This is an invitation only workshop that is expected to result in one or more scientific papers.
Professor Marat Khairtoudinov will be in Austria from April 6-13 to attend the general assembly of the European Geosciences Union. He will be making an oral presentation entitled, “Climate and cloud response of the Super-Parameterized Community Atmosphere Model with additional super-parameterization of low clouds”.

It’s that time again – May Commencement is around the corner, time to place your order for ordering caps and gowns. It is time to start thinking about summer salary. This year, the first day for summer salary is May 27th and the last is August 26th. For any of you who received summer salary from RF last year, you do NOT need to go to HRS to be e-verified again as long as your proof documents have not expired. A separate email will be sent to faculty who need to be e-verified as soon as we receive word from Payroll. However, I will need to know what your RF summer salary start date will be so that HRS can conduct the e-verification process on your behalf using last year’s unexpired proofs. Please respond to me with one of the following: 1) I am not taking summer salary from Research Foundation grants this year. 2) I will receive summer salary from a Research Foundation grant this year, and my start date will be: ________. 3) I will receive summer salary from a Research Foundation grant this year, but do not yet know my start date (please tell me when you expect to know). I would appreciate receiving your responses by April 19th.

Message from Professor Anne McElroy: Please get in touch with students who’ve been accepted, particularly those invited to the recruitment weekend on March 15-17 to congratulate them, and encourage them to come to the weekend if at all possible. Prospective students are supposed to let us know if they are coming by this Friday, March 1. Please also encourage your existing students to participate in the recruitment weekend activities. This weekend only works if we have significant and positive involvement from our current students who host accepted applicants in their homes. Visits at other times can be arranged in some cases, but it is very difficult, and the students miss out on the group activities planned for the recruitment weekend. Carol Dovi is handling all travel for the weekend and all paperwork on everything, and the Graduate Student Club under the direction of Michael White is coordinating student housing and student volunteers for other activities. Prospective students are supposed to arrive by noon on Friday the 15th, and meet with prospective advisors (counselors) and their lab groups that afternoon. A trip out to Southampton is being organized for students coming to work with Brad, Chris, and Joe. If you will not be in town that day, it is your responsibility to arrange for someone else to meet with your prospective students. Friday night is the annual Pot Luck Dinner (Gina is organizing this; please sign up outside the mail room), and Saturday morning until early afternoon is the research symposium this year at the Child’s Mansion (I’m putting the agenda together). I hope as many of you as possible can attend. Please note that although we can encourage prospective students to give us an indication of their plans, they all have until April 15th to either accept or reject our offers.

Long Island food and “pet” pantries are in desperate need of donations. Suggested items include canned goods, boxed cereal, oatmeal, rice, peanut butter and pasta (no glass jars please). They also accept donations of pet food, treats, toys and cat litter.) A collection box is located outside of Endeavour 129. Please consider making a donation to those less for those less fortunate.

Information, Talks, and Publications about Atmospheres
Welcome back! The Spring 2012 semester officially begins on Monday, January 28.
There will be a special Topics in Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences (TAOS) seminar on Tuesday, January 29, at 12:00 noon in Endeavour Hall 120. Professor Yongyun Hu from the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences at Peking University will present a seminar entitled, “Hothouse and Dry Climate During the Snowball-Earth Aftermath.” If you would like to schedule an appointment to meet with Professor Hu, please contact Steve Ortega in the Dean’s Office at 2-8781.
The first Wednesday seminar for this semester will take place on January 30, at 12:00 noon in Endeavour Hall 120. Professor Xing Yuan from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Princeton University will present a seminar entitled, “Dynamic-Model-Based Ensemble Seasonal Hydroclimatic Forecasting.” If you would like to make an appointment to meet with Professor Yuan, please contact Professor Sultan Hameed, at 2-8319.
The Oceans and Atmosphere Colloquium (OAC) series will begin on Friday, February 1, at 12:00 noon in Endeavour Hall 120.
