Information, Talks, and Publications about Atmospheres

The next Topics in Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences (TAOS) seminar will take place onWednesday, September 18, at 12:00 noon in Endeavour Hall 120. Professor Kyle Armour from the Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences will present a seminar entitled, “Time-Varying Climate Sensitivity and the Spatial Pattern of Ocean Heat Uptake” Light refreshments will be served. This week’s Oceans and Atmosphere Colloquium has been cancelled.

There will be two seminars this week in connection with the Biogeochemistry faculty search: (1)September 17, Nils Volkenborn from the Department of Biological Sciences, University of South Carolina, and (2) September 19, Laura Wehrmann, from the Department of Earth Sciences, University of California.  Both seminars will take place at 12:00 noon in Endeavour Hall 120. Topics to be announced.

Stony Brook’s Department of Physics and Astronomy will host a seminar, “Introduction to Software Engineering Practices for Scientific Computing,” by Professor Michael Zingale. The seminar will take place on Wednesday, September 18 at 2:30 p.m. in ESS, room 450.  Additional information is posted on the ITPA bulletin board in Endeavour Hall.

The Friday Weather Discussion will take place on September 20 at 4:30 P.M. in Endeavour Hall 139. Topic to be announced on day of discussion.

Faculty News

The ITPA parking card has been missing for approximately two weeks.  We would appreciate it if you would check your offices and automobiles before we pay for a replacement card.

Student News

Graduate Student Achievement information is due on September 25.  This is an annual document published by the Graduate School which lists the many accomplishments of Stony Brook’s graduate students.  For information, please contact Christina Fink in the Educational Programs Office (christina.fink@stonybrook.edu).

Miscellaneous

The “Walk for Beauty,” a community effort to raise funds for breast cancer research, will take place on Sunday, October 20, beginning at the Stony Brook Village post office.  Proceeds benefit Stony Brook’s School of Medicine.  For further information, please pick up a pamphlet in the Endeavour Hall mail room.
