Information, Talks, and Publications about Atmospheres

This week’s Topics in Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences (TAOS) seminar on Wednesday, March 7, at 12:00 noon is in honor of Distinguished Professor Robert D. Cess.  Dr.  Peter Webster from the School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at the Georgia Institute of Technology will present a seminar entitled, “Hazard Prediction and Implementation in the Less-Developed World: What Works, What Doesn’t Work, and How to Fix It.” Light refreshments will be served. Dr. Webster will also present a special seminar, “Towards a General Theory of Global Monsoons,” on Thursday, March 6, at 10:00 a.m. in Endeavour Hall 113.  All are welcome to attend.

This week’s Oceans and Atmosphere Colloquium will take place on Friday, March 7, at 12:00 noonin Endeavour Hall 120. Professor Peter Petratis from the Department of Biology at the University of Pennsylvania will present a seminar entitled, ” Patterns and Mechanisms: Are Mussels and Seaweeds Alternative Community States in the Gulf of Maine?”  For further information, please contact Steve Ortega at 2-8781.

The Friday Weather Discussion will take place on March 7 at 4:30 p.m. in the Meteorology Laboratory, Endeavour Hall 139. Topic to be announced on day of discussion.

Student News

Recruitment weekend begins on Friday, March 28.  Student help is needed, particularly students willing to host prospective students in their homes, help drive the vans, and host the student party. The planning meeting has been scheduled for Tuesday, March 4, at 3:00 p.m. in Endeavour Hall 113.  Please consider volunteering for this important event.

The University Student Ambassador Selection Committee is seeking nominations from faculty, staff and administrators for new Student Ambassadors. For details, please accesshttp://studentaffairs.stonybrook.edu/dos/amb_about.shtml  Deadline for nominations is Friday, March 7.

Miscellaneous

The 2014 SoMAS Photo Competition is now underway.  This is an annual event where faculty, staff and students share their pictures with the SoMAS community and the general public.  Details are posted on the ITPA bulletin board in Endeavour Hall.  Deadline for submission is Tuesday, March 25.
