Information, Talks, and Publications about Atmospheres
This week’s Topics in Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences (TAOS) seminar will be the final one for the Spring 2014 semester. On Wednesday, May 7, Dr. Roop Saini from the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Connecticut will present a seminar entitled “Is the North American Monsoon Self-Limiting?” Light refreshments will be served. This week’s Oceans and Atmosphere Colloquium will take place on Friday, May 9, at 12:00 noon in Endeavour Hall 120. Professor Frederick Walter from Stony Brook’s Department of Physics and Astronomy will present a seminar entitled, “The Sun in Time.” For further information, please contact Steve Ortega at 2-8781.
The Friday Weather Discussion will take place on May 9 at 4:30 p.m. in the Meteorology Laboratory, Endeavour Hall 139. Topic to be announced on day of discussion.

Message from Professor Anne McElroy:
Faculty counseling first year students:
All first year M.S. and Ph.D. students need to formally choose an advisor by the end of their second semester. There is a form that both the student and the advisor must sign. Also, Carol will soon be asking people to provide grant information for summer support of first year students. If you are counselor for a first year student, hopefully you have already had a discussion with them as to whether or not you intend to become their advisor and whether or not you have funds to support them. If you haven’t, please do so as soon as possible.
Faculty advising 3rd year Ph.D. students: Please keep in mind they are required to advance to candidacy prior to the beginning of their 4th year. With tuition money being tight, it’s not clear students who don’t meet this deadline will be able to keep their tuition scholarships. Carol will be in touch soon to determine whether or not your 3rd year student will likely meet this deadline by September.
Faculty advising advanced Ph.D. students: Please keep in mind that once they form a committee, they are supposed to have annual meetings to go over progress and plans for the coming year. As advisors it’s your responsibility to make sure this happens. We have suggested that to make these meetings most productive you should require students to provide a short write up on their progress to the committee prior to each of these meetings and that you provide written feedback to them on the outcome of the meeting.
