Megan has been an outstanding student in EHM, not only by excelling in classes but looking for work and research far beyond assigned work. She looks for ways to use her interdisciplinary skills in science, GIS and humanities to more deeply understand an issue and to look for solutions in creative ways. Her work, along with Anna Smith, on the Koppelman documentary shows how dedication and creativity can lead to results and products that will have lasting impact.

Charlie Patterson has the strongest potential to contribute to a globally-engaged workforce. He has worked in a wide range of labs both at Stony Brook University and Brookhaven National Lab. He has published a paper and is a happy, thoughtful, supportive person who people, from undergraduates to professors, like to work with. He has a strong moral compass and want more out of life than a hefty paycheck. He wants a more sustainable world.

Clara has all the skills you expect of a Stony Brook student with her GPA. She writes at a graduate level and has an amazing ability to think critically and communicate her thoughts. Outside of the classroom, she has interned in three SBU labs, the Sheltzer Lab at Cold Spring Harbor, and won the prestigious honor of attending an REU last summer at the University of Georgia. With each of those experiences, she accrued honors and skills, but more importantly after each of those experiences, she has demonstrated uncommon generosity by mentoring other students and passing her skills to them. Clara has coauthored three publications as a member of the Sustainability Studies Earthworm Ecotoxicology Laboratory.

Sophia added the EHM major to her other major in Political Science as a way to bring together her research policy and sustainability. She is a wonderful example of a student leader, being selected to the upcoming President’s Council of Student Advisors and serving as a founding member of the SBU chapter of the Food Recovery Network. She has traveled widely and looks for ways to bring justice to environmental, social and political inequities.

Krislyn Rodriguez
Krislyn was nominated by Dr. Eric Zolov in History and is an EHM major. In her time as a student Krislyn has worked hard to make sure the Latin American Student Organization remains a leader on campus in recognizing the Latino student community and reaching out to Katino communities across the island. She was awarded the Ana Maria Torres scholarship for Latino leadership and has been a TA at Student Brook Childcare Services for some time. Krislyn has been a vital part of the EHM major reminding her peers to look thoughtfully across the questions of differing cultures as a way to better create sustainable solutions.
