From SoMAS, Geosciences Take to the Road in the EarthBus on Stony Brook University News, June 25, 2021
Stony Brook University’s School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (SoMAS) and the Department of Geosciences in the College of Arts and Sciences have helped create an “EarthBus Partnership,” an alliance aimed at increasing the diversity of student participation in geosciences.
The National Science Foundation (NSF) funded project targets earth science students and teachers at the middle and high school levels, and community college students. The project goal is to train 2,500 high school students, 120 earth science teachers and 50-60 community college students over the life of the project.
SoMAS professor Kamazima Lwiza leads a team that includes Edmund Chang, Brian Colle, Hyemi Kim from SoMAS and Weisen Shen from the Department of Geosciences in the College of Arts and Sciences. The project will be working with the established BioBus group, which includes Co-Founder and SoMAS graduate student Sarah Weisberg. Sarah and fellow BioBus team members Marina Delgado (BioBus Community Scientist), Ray Wilkerson (BioBus Driver & Programs Assistant), and Gia Piatti (BioBus Volunteer, age 8), gave a tour of the BioBus, when it was on campus on Tuesday, June 22, 2021.
The EarthBus Partnership will recruit and mentor students at high schools with large populations of underrepresented students, bringing awareness of geoscience careers as fulfilling employment paths in private industry, government service and academia.
