The Peconic Estuary Partnership is hiring an Outreach Coordinator through Stony Brook University! The Peconic Estuary Partnership (PEP) is an innovative partnership of local, state, and federal governments, citizen and environmental groups, businesses and industries, and academic institutions charged with carrying out the goals of improved water quality and ecosystem health as outlined in PEP’s Comprehensive Conservation Management Plan. We are looking for an enthusiastic candidate to help develop communication strategies and create educational content with the goal of increasing public awareness, understanding, and appreciation of the Peconic Estuary and its watershed.

The Outreach Coordinator will conduct activities associated with the Peconic Estuary Partnership (PEP) and will work closely with staff, volunteers, and program partners, under the guidance of the Executive Director, to develop communication strategies, create content with the goal of increasing public awareness, understanding, and appreciating of the Peconic Estuary and its watershed.

The successful incumbent will have demonstrated public speaking and presentation and writing skills.

Required Qualifications (as demonstrated by attached resume):
Bachelor’s Degree (foreign equivalent or higher).  Directly related communications and outreach experience. Experience in developing or implementing organizational communication strategies.

Preferred Qualifications: 
Master’s Degree (foreign equivalent or higher). Four (4) years of directly related outreach experience. Familiarity with Peconic Estuary Partnership programs. Experience in environmental education including water quality improvements, habitat restoration, and/or climate change science. Experience in developing or implementing organizational communication strategies. Experience developing science-related materials for public dissemination. Experience working with underserved communities. Experience with website management platforms (i.e. wordpress, and web content management). Experience developing budgets and tracking expenditures.

The Outreach Coordinator’s responsibilities will include the following:

Plan Development

  • Develop an annual communication strategy, identifying PEP initiatives and successes to serve as primary storytelling points to communicate to East End communities, particularly focusing on the inclusion of historically marginalized communities.
  • Cultivate strategic relationships with a broad range of media contacts on a local, state, and regional level.
  • Document metrics and report on activities.
  • Develop resources and programming for educators and students.

Communications

  • Write, edit, and distribute press releases, newsletters, fact sheets, and other publications.
  • Assist in the development of educational signage and other materials.
  • Manage website and social media in consultation with PEP team to identify content, timing, and platforms to create a robust on-line presence.
  • Create content, coordinate and update posts, utilizing photos and other visuals.
  • Serve as key point person for public communications by monitoring and responding to engagement.
  • Support email outreach for general news and events.

Event Management

  • Develop content for, plan, and coordinate all community outreach events, including the PEP Citizens Advisory Committee, the Long Island Wildlife Monitoring Network, the PEP Biennial Conference. and others.
  • Create and deliver presentations as required for meetings, events, and partner reporting, rain or shine.
  • Responsible for physical setup of events to include tables, chairs, and other relevant materials.
  • Provide support to events staff for digital and creative assets, implementation, and monitoring.
  • Supervise volunteers, interns, and temporary staff.

Administration

  • Work closely with the Research Foundation, Office of Grants Management, and Procurement teams at Stony Brook University to procure the services of contractors and products.
  • Manage and track expenditures for outreach budget.
  • Other duties as assigned.

The Research Foundation of SUNY is a private educational corporation. Employment is subject to the Research Foundation policies and procedures, sponsor guidelines and the availability of funding. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.

Evening and weekend work will be required at times.
