To honor our Distinguished Professor Emeritus Robert D. Cess, ITPA established the distinguished TAOS seminar speaker program by naming a speaker after him each year. We are pleased to announce that this year’s Robert. D. Cess Distinguished TAOS seminar speaker is Dr. Lance Bosart.

Dr. Bosart is a distinguished professor of atmospheric sciences in the Albany University of SUNY. He got his BS in Aeronautics and Astronautics, and Master and Ph.D. degrees in Meteorology all at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is an elected fellow of the American Meteorological Society and a recipient of the Jule Charney Award of the society. Dr. Bosart’s research focuses on observational and modeling studies of synoptic and mesoscale phenomena from a multiscale perspective. These include the genesis, tropical and extratropical transition of hurricanes; distribution and evolution of heavy precipitation events; structure and life cycles of cyclones, among others. Dr. Bosart has published over one hundred peer-reviewed articles on these subjects. He received the UCAR Award for Outstanding Publication in 2005 for a paper co-authored with Davis on “Baroclinically induced tropical cyclogenesis.” in the Monthly Weather Review.

Dr. Bosart’s seminar was given on Wednesday, April 1, 2009 with the title “Modern Weather Forecasting: Scientific Opportunities and Operational Challenges.”
