Welcome Back!  The Spring 2005 semester officially begins on Monday, January 24th.

This semester’s first TAOS speaker is Edward Cook from the Tree-Ring Laboratory, Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory.  Professor Cook will present a seminar entitled,”Long-Term Aridity Changes in the Western United States: Links to the Tropical Pacific and Radiative Forcing,”  on Wednesday, January 26 at 11:30 a.m. in Endeavour 120.  Light refreshments will be served.  If you would like to schedule an appointment to meet with Professor Cook, please contact Sultan Hameed at shameed@notes.cc.sunysb.edu.

This week’s Oceans and Atmospheres Colloquium speaker, Frank Buonaiuto, from MSRC  will present a seminar entitled, “Rip Currents Morphological Link to Edge Waves” on Friday, January 28 at 12:30 p.m. in Endeavour 120.

Faculty News

We are delighted to announce that Professor Nicole Riemer, a post-doc from Stanford University will be joining the ITPA faculty on March 1st.  Professor Riemer received her Ph.D. from the University of Karlsruhe (Germany) in 2002, was a post-doc at UC Davis from 2003 to March 2004, and has been a post-doc at Stanford University (Center for Turbulence Research) since April 2004. The focus of her research is the interaction of transport of trace gases and aerosol particles in the troposphere with chemistry and microphysics — cloud formation, and climate impact of aerosol.

Marvin Geller will be in Germany to help the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (the German equivalent to our NSF) in reviewing proposals for their new priority program “Climate and Weather of the Sun-Earth-System (CAWSES).”  The review is on January 26 and 27.    CAWSES is an international program of the international Scientific Committee on Solar-Terrestrial Physics (SCOSTEP).  Marvin Geller is in his second term as the elected President of SCOSTEP.

Professor Duane Waliser will Chair an AGU session on Modeling, Simulating, and Forecasting Subseasonal Atmospheric Variability in New Orleans, LA  in May.  Deadline for abstracts is February 10th.  For more information, please visit http://www.agu.org/meetings/sm05/?content=search&show=detail&sessid=170.

ITPA participated in the American Meteorological Society’s 85th Student Conference and Career Fair  on January 8th & 9th in San Diego, CA.  Special thanks to Xiaosong Yang for representation ITPA at this event.

The NASA Goddard Space Flight Center is sponsoring a “Summer Institute on Atmospheric, Hydrospheric, and Terrestrial Sciences, from June 6th to August 12th in Greenbelt, Maryland.  This program is designed to introduce undergraduate students majoring in all  areas of the physical sciences to research opportunities in atmospheric, hydrospheric, and terrestrial sciences, both theoretical and experimental.  No previous experience is needed.  Please see the ITPA bulletin board in Endeavour Hall for further information on application procedures, or visithttp://neptune.gsfc.nasa.gov/summerinstitute/.

The NASA Goddard Space Flight Center’s Earth-Sun Exploration Division, in collaboration  with the Goddard Earth Sciences and Technology (GEST) Center of the University of Maryland-Baltimore County, is offering a limited number of graduate student research opportunities.  The program is scheduled for June 6th to August 12th and is designed to stimulate interest in interdisciplinary Earth Science studies by enabling selected students to carry out an intensive research project at GSFC, which can be applied to the student’s graduate thesis.  Deadline for applications is February 28th.  For more information, please visit http://gest.umbc.edu/student_opp/students.html.  Further information may also be found on the ITPA  bulletin board in Endeavour Hall.

Professor Sultan Hameed will be visiting the Horn Point Marine Laboratory of the University of Maryland on February 2, where he will present a seminar entitled, “An Improvement on the NAO.”

On January 24 in OCN 694 , the following discussion teams were decided upon: Team A – Shaun Bell, Owen Doherty, Michael Erickson, Yanjuan Guo, Jae N. During the winter break, graduate student, Xiaosong Yang, attended the annual general meeting of the American Meteorological Society in San Diego. During the meeting, he presented a paper entitled, “Variability of the Southern Hemisphere winter split flow — a case of two way reinforcement between mean flow and eddy anomalies” which he co-authored with Professor Edmund Chang.

The National Weather Center in Norman, Oklahoma invites motivated undergraduate students interested in a career in scientific research or secondary science education to apply for a summer research program. On February 4, Professor Minghua Zhang presented a seminar entitled, “”Deceleration of the atmospheric vertical circulation in the tropics: observation, modeling results, theory, and implications” at Brookhaven National Laboratory’s Department of Applied Sciences.

Later this week, Minghua Zhang will travel to Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) in California to work with their DOE ARM infrastructure team on the MPCAE field campaign analysis. While there, he will also present a seminar.

Following are two job announcements from the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA). The first is for a research scholar who will also serve as the Program Officer for the Institute’s Greenhouse Gas Initiative (GGI); the second is for a research scholar to work with the new Population and Climate Change (PCC) Program. Please circulate these announcements widely among possible applicants. The postings, along with information about the Institute, can also be viewed at IIASA’s Website: http://www.iiasa.ac.at/docs/IIASA_Employment.html. The GGI position offers an extremely interesting opportunity for a scientist with good organizational skills and broad, interdisciplinary interests, who would like to work for a while in Europe. The successful candidate could come from any of a broad range of fields with interests in modeling, and developing policy options for, global change. The PCC position requires a background in economic modeling, including familiarity with econometric and general equilibrium models.

Brian Colle is participating in the Urban Dispersion Field Program for New York City between March 7-21, 2005. The objective is to advance our knowledge about the movement of contaminants within NYC and into and within building interiors. Inert (and safe!!) tracers will be released around Madison Square Garden twice during two week period to learn about the flow within the deep urban canyons under ambient westerly and southwesterly flow. The Colle group will be providing high resolution MM5 and ensemble forecasts, which will be coupled to urban-scale models, as well as daily forecast briefings. The 15th National Summer School at the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics, University of Cambridge, will be offered from September 11 to September 24. This intensive summer school aims to introduce participants to fluid dynamics as applied to geophysical and environmental flows. It is intended primarily for students pursuing research towards a Ph.D. and is also suitable for those in industry and government interested in improving their background in the fluid mechanical aspects of environmental problems. Please join us this week for a very special TAOS seminar in honor of Distinguished Professor Robert D. Cess. Professor David Randall from the Department of Atmospheric Science, Colorado State University, will present a seminar entitled, “Floating Honeycombs: Simulating the Atmosphere and Ocean with Geodesic Grids and Quasi-Lagrangian Vertical Coordinates,” on Tuesday, April 5 at 10:00 a.m. in Endeavour Hall 120. This week’s Oceans and Atmospheres Colloquium speaker, Professor Bruce Brownawell from MSRC, will present a seminar entitled, “Identification of Contaminants Responsible for Toxicity in Urban Harbor Sediments.” The seminar will take place on Friday, April 8 at 12:15 p.m. in Endeavour Hall 120.

The Okubo Fund Committee is pleased to announce that Professor Thomas (Zack) Powell will be this year’s Okubo Distinguished Visiting Scholar. Professor Powell will visit MSRC from April 19-22 and give two talks (April 20 and April 22). Additional details will be provided closer to his visit.

The Robert L. de Zafra 2nd Annual ITPA Student Symposium will be held on Thursday, April 28 from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the Wang Center, room 103. In collaboration with NOAA’s Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL), the Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences Program at Princeton University solicits applications for its Postdoctoral, Research, and Visiting Scientist program. Conant from the Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering, California Institute of Technology, will present a seminar entitled, “Reconciling Models and Observations of Direct and Indirect Aersol Forcings.” On Wednesday, April 13, at 11:30 a.m., Arnaud Czaja from the Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, will present a seminar entitled, “The Partitioning of the Poleward Heat Transport Between the Ocean and Atmosphere.” Both seminars will be held in Endeavour Hall 120. Kolby Jardine, a first-year Ph.D. student in Professor John Mak’s lab, recently received a two-year fellowship from the NSF-funded BART (Biosphere-Atmosphere Research Training) Program. Kolby will receive $30,000 per year for two years. He will also spend this summer in the field in central Michigan. Congratulations, Kolby!

The Petra M. Udelhofen Memorial Scholarship Awards Committee is currently soliciting applications for the 2005 award of the $500 scholarship. The award may be used for tuition, support for books, fees and other educational expenses. The scholarship is awarded annually to an undergraduate entering their senior year of study in the Environmental Studies or Atmospheric Sciences/Meteorology program at Stony Brook University. . Congratulations to Jyotika Virmani, Marvin Geller’s MS student from Fall 1993 to Spring 1995. Jyotika recently defended her Ph.D. in oceanography at the University of South Florida, studying the West Florida shelf with Bob Weisberg. Duane Waliser was a member of her Ph.D. thesis committee.

The Topics in Oceanic and Atmospheric Sciences seminar series will begin again on September 7 with a talk by Isaac Held from NOAA’s Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory.

The Ocean and Atmospheres Colloquiums and Friday Weather Discussions will resume in September.

Faculty News

Please mark your calendars for the next faculty meeting on Wednesday, May 11 at 3:00 p.m. in Endeavour 120 (refreshments at 5:00 p.m.).

By invitation of the Taiwan Space Agency, Professor Marvin Geller, President of the Scientific Committee On Solar-TErrestrial Physics (SCOSTEP) will convene a meeting of the SCOSTEP Bureau in Taipei, Taiwan next week. He will also present an invited paper at the 11th International Symposium on Equatorial Aeronomy, a major international gathering of scientists engaged in the studies of the low latitude atmosphere and ionosphere and the coupling of low latitudes to mid latitudes.

Later this month, Professor Edmund Chang will be attending the AGU spring meeting to present a paper “Using observations to assess the increasing trend of storm track activity found in NCEP/NCAR and ERA40 reanalyses”.

In June, Professor Chang and graduate students Xiaosong Yang and Yanjuan Guo will be attending the AMS 15th Conference in Atmospheric and Oceanic Fluid Dynamics and 17th Conference in Climate Variability and Change. They will be presenting 4 papers: “Differences between the seasonal cycles in the distribution of precipitation around cyclones in the western North Pacific and Atlantic” by Edmund Chang and Siwon Song; “A case of two way reinforcement between mean flow and eddy anomalies: variability of the Southern Hemisphere winter split flow” by Xiaosong Yang and Edmund Chang; “Dynamics of the interannual variability of the winter Pacific storm track” by Yanjuan Guo and Edmund Chang; and “Increase in storm track activity during the second half of the twentieth century, and its potential impacts on atmosphere-ocean CO2 exchange” by Edmund Chang and Yanjuan Guo.
