Dean Minghua Zhang has formed two search committees to search for three faculty positions. The first committee is chaired by Edmund Chang and is charged to search for one faculty in Atmospheric Sciences (ATM) and one faculty in Physical Oceanography (PO). The second committee is chaired by Robert Cerrato and is charged to search for a Fisheries Ecologist. All three positions will be at the Assistant Professor level, but our advertisements will include the language of “exceptional candidates can be considered at other ranks.” The three searches will start simultaneously. The two search committees will work on the position descriptions and the advertisements shortly. Please speak to the committee Chairs if you have any input for the search, including nominations of potential candidates once the advertisement is out.

Student News

Storm Observation and Research Meteorology (STORM) Program 2012: The STORM program is available to ATM Majors with Junior/Senior Standing (as of summer 2012). The Storm Observation and Research Meteorology (STORM) Program is designed to teach students how to observe convective storms and use the datasets they collect and other classroom learning tools to investigate the evolution of severe weather and to learn approaches how to forecast these events. The program is scheduled to coincide near the climatological peak for tornado occurrence (late May into early June) over the central and northern Plains. In collaboration with the SUNY Oswego meteorology program, participants will drive to the Plains States (Tornado Alley) for the first two weeks of this 3-week program. Each morning, students will analyze real-time data, produce forecasts, discuss their forecasts, and depart to the target area (where it is believed that severe thunderstorms will develop). At the end of each chase day, participants will compare what was observed to their forecasts. This is when the real learning will occur! The last week of the program will take place on the SUNY Oswego campus, where students will compare their observations and forecast methods to the theories on severe storm development and forecast techniques. Participants will conduct research projects with the data collected during each chase. Some will develop case studies of specific events while others will test hypotheses related to thunderstorm behavior. Students receive 2 credits for this field work by registering for ATM 487 (Senior Research in Atmospheric Sciences) in Summer I semester. The Program Cost is $2,400 per student, which includes everything except food. Please contact Professor Brian Colle by December 15, 2011 if you wish to participate next Spring 2012.

The National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) will host a summer colloquium on “Subseasonal variability and its impact at the weather-climate intersection” from June 4-22, 2012. Colloquium convenors are Mitch Moncrieff, George Kiladis, and Lance Bosart. The colloquium is targeted at graduate students who have completed at least two years of doctoral level study in the atmospheric sciences and related disciplines. A week-long researcher colloquium (June 11-15) will be a part of the overall colloquium. The announcement may be accessed at:http://www.asp.ucar.edu/colloquium/2012/index.php.

DISCCRS (DISsertations initiative for the advancement of Climate Change ReSearch) VII
Interdisciplinary Climate Change Research Symposium
October 13-20, 2012
La Foret Conference and Retreat Center
Colorado Springs, CO

Participation is limited to 30 early-career Ph.D. scholars. Airfare and on-site expenses are supported through grants from NSF and NASA. It is imperative for climate change researchers to form strong collaborative bonds that reach across disciplines and other boundaries. Every year the DISsertations initiative for the advancement of Climate Change ReSearch (DISCCRS, pronounced discourse) hosts a symposium for early-career climate change researchers. Our goal is to catalyze international, interdisciplinary collaboration while laying the foundation for dynamic, communicative collegial networks that are better-equipped to understand and respond to the myriad challenges posed by climate change. During the week-long symposium, 30 invited DISCCRS Scholars will have the opportunity to present their research, hone interdisciplinary communication and teambuilding skills, and discuss emerging research and trends. Scholars will also have the opportunity to discuss societal and professional challenges involved in climate change research, with each other and with established researchers invited to serve as mentors. Applications will be reviewed by an interdisciplinary collection of climate researchers. The selection committee will favor applicants who plan to engage in interdisciplinary research careers in any subject relevant to the study of climate change, its impacts or its solutions. We encourage applicants from the natural and social sciences, mathematics, engineering, and other fields, so long as their current research relates to climate change, its impacts or its solutions. While the emphasis is on the U.S. research system, we welcome applicants from all countries who are interested in connecting with U.S. researchers. Deadline for applications is February 29. 2012.
Symposium application instructions may be accessed at http://disccrs.org/application_instructions
