Abstract:  Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and particulate organic carbon (POC) are major components of the marine carbon cycle, with complicated interactions that have been revealed through isotopic analyses over the past ~ 30 years. This article presents the general systematics of 14C analyses and interpretations, followed by a discussion of several canonical 14C-based discoveries that led to the current understanding of marine DOC and POC biogeochemistry.
