The School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences at Stony Brook University is accepting applications for a Marine Laboratory Technician.

The Marine Laboratory Technician will assist the manager of the Marine Sciences Center in the maintenance of the Center’s wet lab and teaching classrooms and laboratories.  The incumbent will also be responsible to serve as a naturalist for community outreach programs and serve as a deckhand aboard our research vessels. Incumbent must be available to work nights and weekends as needed. Successful candidates will be asked to take SCUBA classes, if not already certified.

Required Qualifications (as evidenced by attached resume):
Bachelor’s Degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in marine science, environmental science, or closely related field. Two (2) years of experience working with aquatic life support systems. Experience with PVC plumbing. Knowledge of local fauna and flora. Experience with small vessel operation. Must have, keep and maintain the appropriate valid NYS Driver’s License; have a motor vehicle record which is free from major violations or a pattern of repeat violations.  (***Out-of-State Applicants, see “Special Notes”).

Preferred Qualifications:
Advanced Degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in marine science, environmental science, or closely related field. Experience as an educator (adolescent to adult). Experience as a naturalist. SCUBA certified.

Duties:

  • Wet Lab:
    • Assist the lab manager in the maintenance/repair of the seawater system.
    • Supervise researchers (faculty, graduate and undergraduate students, and outside users) in the proper operating procedures of the seawater system.
    • Assist researchers with proper animal husbandry to ensure they are IACUC compliance.
    • Provide support to all users of the wet lab users (i.e., experimental design, set-up/construction, field collection, transport).
    • Respond to off-hour facility-related emergencies when needed.
  • Facilities:
    • Coordinate with Center’s supervisor and facilities managers for maintenance, repairs and upkeep of the Marine Sciences Center.
    • Oversee faculty, staff, and student personnel utilizing the Marine Science Center.
  • Academic Programming:
    • Prepare classrooms and lab facilities for class needs.
    •  Arrange for routine maintenance and calibration of facility equipment including computing interfaced analytical instrumentation.
  • Community Outreach:
    • Interact with members of the public who visit the Marine Science Center. Conduct tours and teach educational programs for outside groups and special events.
    • Serve as a naturalist on our research vessels and land-based excursions.
    • Organize and lead special programs and activities for visiting researchers, students, dignitaries and organizations.
    • Represent SoMAS at public events as appropriate.
  • Vessel Operations:
    • Serve as crew in the operation of SoMAS research vessels.  Be familiar with shipboard safety rules and procedures to ensure the safety of personnel.
    • Operate deck gear in the deployment and retrieval of sampling equipment.
    • Perform additional routine shipboard and shore-side duties as directed by the fleet manager.
  • Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.

Special Notes:
This is a full time appointment. FLSA Nonexempt position, eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Evening and weekend work will be required at times.
