Student runners were victorious for the first time in the fourth annual running of the Flax to Vax Challenge on a cool but sunny morning, Sunday. With an average time of 33 ’00”, the fastest-ten students outpaced the five faculty/staff runners by 1 ’47”. Students Bob Chant and Mark Green won the race in dramatic style, sprinting the last ten yards to the finish line, which they crossed together at 29’09”, the fastest time in the race’s short history. Following Chant and Green, the student qualifiers were Jed Brown, Jeff Schell, Andrew Matthews, Kevin Hovel, Jeanne Gulnick, Jeff
Buckel, Kevin Weiman and David Tonjes. Of the eight faculty/staff participants in the race, Francisco
Borrero finished first at 31 ’40”. Faculty/staff qualifiers after Borrero included Chuck Nittrouer, Eric Schultz, Bob Aller and Anne West Valle.

At a post-race barbeque, one student runner was overheard saying how good it felt to finally beat the faculty. “I guess Chuck [Nittrouer] is finally slowing down. He’s a great competitor, but you can’t stay in the game forever.” Said Chant, “I’m glad we won, especially since I bought the beverages for the barbeque.”

Faculty/staff runners owe Bob Chant $ for the barbeque !! (so pay up!)
