R/V Siome (retired)
The Research Vessel Siome was a 23-foot Penn Yan shallow draft boat with cabin and tunnel drive. The boat was outfitted by Steven C. Leffert, MSRC Small Boat Captain, in 1980. Cliff Jones served as the Siome’s captain throughout most of its service.
The Siome was purchased by Dr. Harry Carter, a physical oceanographer at MSRC, through a research grant. The tunnel drive on the R/V Siome enabled the vessel to go into the very shallow waters ( 14 inches ) in the Great South Bay. The boat was operated exclusively for Harry for several years in the Great South Bay, Peconic Bay, Hudson river, Long Island Sound, off the south shore in the Atlantic, and Flushing Bay.
Dr. Carter donated the boat to MSRC for rental purposes and the boat continued to see use across the south shore of Long Island from Far Rockaway to Montauk Point. The boat continued to be used until it was finally sold in the late 1990s.
The R/V Siome was equipped with a thermosalinograph, a salinometer, a Loran-C receiver and a data logger. It was powered by an inboard 350 Chevy engine and had a custom-designed electric winch on deck used for over-the-side sampling.
