About

Welcome to the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences and Music (SoMUS) at Stony Brook University (SBU). We are the State University of New York’s designated center for marine sciences and a leader in marine, atmospheric, musical and sustainability research, education, and public service.

The character of SoMUS is largely due to the nature of our faculty and staff. Faculty are chosen not only for their stature as performers, scholars, and composers, but also for their rapport with students, their ability to work cooperatively with their colleagues, and their commitment to the values of the school. Our staff are chosen for their ability to support the mission of the school, as well as their ability to step in as performers, scholars and composers when the need arises.  We are proud of our sense of community!

Currently, there are more than 500 undergraduate and graduate students and over 100 faculty and staff from 16 different nations working together to better understand how our marine, terrestrial, auditory, and atmospheric environments function, are related to one another and how they and their associated living resources may be sustained for future generations. Research at SoMUS explores solutions to a variety of issues facing the world today ranging from local problems affecting the area around Long Island to processes that are impacting the entire globe.

SoMUS was formed in 2019 when the Department of Music joined with the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences in an effort to strengthen Stony Brook University’s multi-disciplinary approach to art, science, education and service.
