Show Statement

Spaces of the Mind is an exhibition that shows the numerous possibilities that the mind is capable of creating. The mind controls our recollection of memory, our perception of the world, the imagination that goes into creating new worlds, and much more. It is a chaotic wonderland where ideas are fleeting and one never holds complete focus. This chaotic space is visually represented by the range of works in this exhibition.

The foundation of the mind are our memories. Some of the works in the exhibition explore our relationship to memories. In Fiona Agababian’s work, Drifting, memory is depicted as fluid and incomplete, as over time memories fade and change. The recollection of an experience will never be the same as when the memory was made, since the mind warps it.
Our experiences inform how we perceive and interpret the world around us. A number of the works in the exhibition speak to the way each artist perceives and interprets the world. The idea of interpretation is the center of Liana Cubells’ work, The Imagination of Reading. Cubells uses books as a means to show the limitations of interpretations and how perspectives can vary between individuals.

The greatest ability of the mind is its ability to create. All of the work in this show began as ideas in the artists’ minds, but there are several works that involve invention. Daniel Ryan takes the idea of invention head on in his work, Head of the Hill. Ryan paints a world that is based in reality but has been warped to show what the world would be like if he could bend reality. His work is an invented world where his mind is in control of inventing the world. The mind provides seemingly endless possibilities to creating and inventing, but it is also the mind that makes the decision between those possibilities.

The work in this exhibition delves into different areas of the artists; conscious and subconscious, exploring the ideas of memory, perception, and invention. Our minds are in a constant cycle of taking in new experiences, interpreting them, and using those interpretations to inform our future experiences. All of the work in this exhibition speaks to a part of this cycle to create a visually diverse representation of the chaotic space that is the mind.
