Art department and Hispanic Languages & Literature department of State University of New York, Stony Brook, announce the 1st edition of the International Conference on Sound Studies and Experimental Practices.
This first conference edition, titled AWA: ACTIONS OF WATER AWARENESS, will explore water as a vital element in the world’s ecosystems and examine this environment’s profound interconnection with sound.
This conference invites scholars in sound studies and cultural studies, as well as sound artists, scientists, and professionals from related disciplines to share their research through academic papers, artist talks, and posters/demos, which contribute to the discussion about how water resonates with and reverberates through cultural, social, biological, and environmental dimensions. We seek to build upon this history by leveraging the unique perspectives of sound studies and contemporary sonic arts.
In the past 60 years, sound-based practices and epistemologies have emerged as a distinct approach to understanding our environment, ecology, and society, challenging ocularcentrism in the production of knowledge. This conference aims to bring together diverse perspectives on water through an interdisciplinary lens, using sound as a catalyst for dialogue and engaging cultural history, sound studies, science, Latin American and Iberian literature, and artistic practices and their reflections and experiences. This approach invites reflection across a wide range of fields, encouraging a broad and timely discussion about our contemporary world between the humanities, art, ecology, and science.
