Obviously not all of these images go with my project and or can be obtained by photographing in the hospital, but they are great inspiration for my personal work as well.

This little photo gallery shows how the siblings in this family met their little sister Frankie. It definitely gives me ideas on how to incorporate siblings in a sweet and safe way.

Artist Statement in the workings….

I picked up my first camera sort of by accident, I was in an art class trying to create a unique Vinyl cover and I didn’t want to use anyone else’s images. That night I went home borrowed my fathers camera dressed my sister up lit her with some construction lamps and created my first piece of ‘art’. What I didn’t know that night was that I would fall in love. It may have started as an accident but it turned into a full fledged passion of mine that is so much of a part of my life I can’t see myself without it. I use my camera to express life as a whole. I like to capture the innocence within human nature, whether it be of people or of majestic areas. A lot of people take a look at themselves or where they are standing and they take life for granted, they are judgmental and they need to stop and breath in the beauty of everyday life. Thats what I like to capture. Capturing the special moments that make life beautiful. Even people that are experiencing that moment don’t always take a step back to view it the way I do. Thats why I love what I do, I can capture that moment for a life time. Showing people my work and making their moment look effortless is something special. The subject of my images is generally people. I love creating portraits. I specialize in capturing newborn portraits. I came into the love on newborns rather unexpectedly. My best friends sister had a baby and she knew I was a photographer. She asked if I could take her now 9 day old sons pictures. In order to impress her I said of course piece of cake, boy was I in for it. Newborns are difficult, I needed to learn the tricks of being a so called baby whisperer. After a long day of shooting and being have covered in baby throw up I just about passed out. But when I stopped to think about I just captured a moment that will never happen again….I fell head over heels in love. Ever since then I wanted to photograph baby after baby after baby. I was of course very timid because they are such small individual creatures that I felt I could break. But I guess I have a sixth sense for it because they love me I can soothe almost every baby I come in contact with. It has become a great passion of mine to be able to represent these beautiful newborns first moments through my artwork. I never want to stop capturing their first moments.

I really liked this artist statement by Elisa Paloschil, so I used it as a form to build my artist statement around. Feel free to use my work as a model for yours.

“I use photography as a means of self-expression – I make pictures for myself, to identify with hidden qualities of my character, to better understand my reality, and to express my interpretation of the world around me. A clearer understanding of myself and of my world allow me to explore fragments of life as an abstract form, and also to interact with people I would otherwise not be able to engage with. My goal is to use my camera like Alice’s rabbit hole, to open an unexplored world, a place of curious self-expression, but also a world of new relationships, new chances new beginnings and most importantly new stories.”

I use photography as a means to document the world around me. I make pictures that call attention to things that other people overlook. This exploration of the overlooked helps me engage more deeply with where I am in space and time. My goal is to make photographs that draw viewers into the now. A focus on details keeps us in the present, it stops us from fretting on the future or regretting the past. My photographs are like a physical meditation.

“My choice of subject comes from a place of intuition and is fuelled by an impetuous desire to partake in the stories that unfold around me. I seek the unknown and I look for the light within the shadows, the stories that are not at first obvious and the uncommon in the common. I photograph people in their environments because I am curious of what lays behind their eyes, where they have been and where they hope to go. My photography evokes the passage of time. I use slow shutter speeds and double exposures to explore the nuances of movement and the modulation of time as it passes from past to present to future. Recently I have begun to work with landscapes, attempting to illustrate abstract, evocative scenery as a motif to epitomize the idea of imagined space, a reminder that what I create through the viewfinder is only real to me.”

My choice of subject comes from my interest in ideas about beauty, and emotional connections. I enjoy finding photographs that capture candid moments. I photograph people in their natural environment because I want to preserve a moment in time. Recently I have focused on portraits that capture mood through light and composition.

“I am inspired to compose by the contrast of light and dark, while I use the changing light of day to arouse the mood of my dreams.  Strangely, colour has appeared in my work, slowly and without intention, concealing the black and white imagery of my past. This colour conjures images of my favourite foods – mangoes, chocolate and spicy masala chai, and surprises me.  Gone with the black and white is my concern with documenting a story, rather I find myself interested in the results of immersing myself in the story and recording my own reactions and actions to my world.  The photographs of Faces and Places come from that immersion.”

I am inspired by the moments we lose to memory. I hope to bottle up happy moments in my photographs to save for later. Perhaps unsurprisingly, these photos reference memories of home and family. This collection of work comes from my desire to preserve important those beautiful moments in my life.

Example Artist Statement

Artist Statement
I picked up my first camera when I was seven years old. My parents bought it for me, and I was thrilled to be able to document everything that was happening around me. I mainly photographed my family and friends because people’s interactions fascinated me: unpredictable and unprompted, and often entertaining.

In 1998 I moved to the United States from Argentina and decided to enroll in my first black and white photography course at a Community Darkroom in Rochester, New York. Photography became my passion. I would spend very long days printing black and white photos in the darkroom. I even set up my own darkroom at home. In 2000, I moved to the Bay Area and enroll in a few classes at San Jose State University, finally graduating with a BFA in photography in 2005.

The theme in my images has remained the same throughout my life. I am still fascinated by people: their reactions and interactions. My photographs are influenced by the style of documentary photographers: my work embraces spontaneity. I generally avoid posing my subjects. Even when I do more formal portraits, I encourage people to be spontaneous. I like capturing people’s reactions and feelings without them being aware of my presence. During my photography sessions, I place great emphasis on making sure everyone is at ease in front of the camera.

I am particularly interested in photographing children. I have two daughters of my own, and I find their candor and naturalness extremely appealing. I do formal, as well as candid portraits of children, adults and families. I also photograph any kind of social gatherings.
