Project 2 Proposal: Migraines

A neuro disorder that most people have experienced in their lives are migraines. Migraines are extreme headaches that can last for a few hours to even days if they are super severe. Migraines are considered a neurological disease because of the symptoms such as being sensitive to sound, throbbing pain in the head, and many more. Migraines are a serious issue and the 3rd most prevalent disease in the world. While there is no definitive cure for migraines, art therapy is considered a potential stress reducer and a way to ease the pain. Regarding a connection to an Oliver Sacks book, I read The Man who Mistook his Wife for a Hat and other Clinical Tales. The story that stuck out to me was the last case study called The Autist Artist. This story is about how Oliver Sacks met a boy. previously thought to be mentally retarded but in actuality, he was on the autism spectrum. Sacks kept meeting with the young man and he asked to him to do drawings for him. The young man was happy to see Sacks after his first visit and the patient to professional connection really connected with me. While the story itself isn’t related to Migraines, the use of art really inspired me to do research on how Migraines can be expressed in art.Through my research, I read an article about how a painter expresses herself while suffering a migraine. The artist’s name is Priya Rama. For my project, I might create an artwork based on how I feel when I have a migraine or an abstract piece on the concept of a migraine. Perhaps a short animation video on what it feels like to have a migraine.
