When I was 18 and done with school, I decided not to go to college because I had found a great job over the summer working at a fine dining French restaurant and had moved out of my parents’ home to an apartment of my own. My parents told me that if I did not go to college and moved out, that I would receive no financial help from them anymore and that I would be on my own to figure the world out. I’m glad they chose this kick me out of the nest style of parenting when I turned 18. I was young and did not think I needed to further my education to be a successful member of society. For about two years, I was making good money, had a nice car, and was enjoying life in the service industry.
After gaining some money and experience of the work environment, I had decided to start my own business. I created a business plan for myself and ordered some business cards. I started a company called “Trinkle Painting and Carpentry,” which involved painting the interior and exterior of houses, remodeling, and construction. At first I posted my ad’s on Craigslist and Facebook. I immediately started selling jobs and had many repeat customers as well as referrals. I saw myself stepping deeper and deeper into a career path that was labor based. It was not creative or challenging enough for me nor was it mentally challenging, I wanted more.
