final critique – ‘at a glance’

Every day on campus you see and come across different people constantly. What you don’t normally notice is the judgements your brain automatically creates about your surroundings. I wanted to capture a ‘first glance’ type of series that would emulate your eyes wandering and looking at someone for a brief second if you were to be walking by. In addition, I wanted to highlight things about the photo that might catch your attention with the use of gifs. The highlighted brands may not necessarily represent this person, but it adds to the schema you create about them.

Drawing inspiration from a few artists was how I decided to incorporate another art element to my photography. Ben Heine was the first artist I came across who had very famous works that used hand drawings. While Brisseaux and Cristiana Costin used a more digital graphic design element approach. Overall, I didn’t want to crowd or completely transform my photographs the way they did. So instead I chose to digitally draw/edit on photoshop for a more subtle look that could still be seen as hand drawn.

But I still wanted to leave and add the final photo composition of the people I photographed. In my opinion, I hoped my above pictures built up a mystery or curiosity to who the people are and that the two photos (under ‘reveal photos’ post) would settle this. But also would test if you made any assumptions about my photograph subjects and if they were true or not when looking at the revealed photos.
