Common Medical Conditions
There are many heart conditions that abnormalities in the T-wave can bring attention to. This includes ischemia, coronary artery disease, myocardial infarction, and other conditions. The main ones we focus on in our design are coronary artery disease and myocardial infarction because they are some of the most common heart conditions that people suffer from and the T-wave can detect them.
Coronary Artery Disease: Coronary artery disease is the blockage of blood flow to the myocardium due to a buildup of plaque over a long time. The plaque within the arteries can block blood flow or even stop it entirely leading to further damage to the heart. The plaque can also harden onto the arterial wall and tear off from the constant flow of blood, causing an arterial dissection which is a medical emergency that requires immediate attention.
Myocardial Infarction: A myocardial infarction is the partial or full blockage of blood flow to a part of the myocardium. The heart cannot receive proper blood flow due to a clot or due to the heart failing to pump blood. This condition is also more commonly known as a heart attack.
Both conditions are very serious and require medical intervention as soon as possible to prevent permanent damage to the heart, arteries, and vessels surrounding the heart, and to prevent death. The main symptoms a person can experience that can warn of these conditions are chest pain, a feeling of increased pressure in the chest cavity, or a feeling of discomfort that can radiate to the arm, shoulder, neck, or head. We worry that these conditions can lead to heart failure, and death, and our design intends to catch these conditions and tell a person even before signs and symptoms show, to ensure that the person in question receives appropriate medical attention before major problems arise.
