Dr. Rachael Orben set sail for South Georgia earlier this week to conduct field studies on black-browed (Thalassarche melanophris) and grey-headed albatrosses (T. chrysostoma) at the British Antarctic Survey’s Bird Island Research Station. Rachael will be deploying accelerometer, magnetometer and GPS tags as well as heart rate loggers on albatrosses in order to understand how wind patterns influence albatross energetics. This work is being funded by Lesley’s NSF CAREER award, and will contribute to ongoing research conducted by postdoc Dr. Melinda Conners along with Rachael and graduate student Dallas Jordan. Stay tuned for updates from Rachael, who will be residing at the remote Bird Island field station until late February!
