Robert Capa, a Hungarian photographer, was originally named Friedmann Endre. He is best known for his war pictures, making him one of the greatest photojournalists in the 20th Century. He first gained fame as a war correspondent for the Spanish Civil War. He also took pictures for World War II. He captured moments of the heaviest fighting in Africa, Sicily, and Italy. He witnessed a total of five different wars: The Spanish Civil War, the Second Sino- Japanese War, World War II, the 1948 Arab- Israeli War, and the first Indochina War. “If your pictures aren’t good enough, then you are not close enough,” Robert Capa.
One of his famous pictures is the Landing of the American Troops on Omaha Beach, Normandy. The second picture is a soldier’s harrowing D-Day landing.
Ironically, the greatest war photographer hates war. Born to Jewish parents he had to leave Germany because of the nazi regime. He settled in paris. He was awarded many awards throughout his lifetime. For example, the French army awarded him the Croix de Guerre with Palm post- humously. In 1955, the Robert Capa Gold Medal award was created for exceptional merit.
In conclusion, the reason why I was so captivated by Robert Capa was how he risked his safety and well-being to capture pictures during such chaotic and dangerous times. A picture can tell a thousand words. I truly believe Robert Capa embodied this statement. There are so many details and emotions in each and every one of his pictures. I truly look up to him and his work.
