Still Lives That Won’t Hold Still
On Teju Cole’s Article
Teju Cole’s Still Lives That Won’t Hold Still is important because he informs the reader of the late Marie Cosindas, a pioneer of color photography. I did not know of Marie Cosindas until now, and Cole’s article brought this wonderful artist’s work to the light. Teju Cole’s writing can be a little hard to follow at times, but I still enjoyed reading his review of Cosindas’ still life/arrangement work. His writing was very descriptive and poetic, more like a story than a summary. This article first attracted me because of the photo of toys, that looked almost like a painting. Cole discusses in the article how Cosindas’ work is similar to another female artist named Rachel Ruysch who painted still life.
