Executive Summary
This has been a busy and exciting year for Teaching, Learning & Technology (TLT). Our three units, Academic Technology Services, Educational Technologies and The Faculty Center have each faced significant growth in demands for more classroom improvements, SINC sites, technologies and faculty development. As leaders of our respective units, we have maintained our focus on delivering a high-quality faculty and student experience while internally working to support our staff who are stretched to capacity. This report provides a high-level overview of our shared and individual activities and accomplishments while also detailing our challenges and need for continuing our success as campus providers of teaching, learning and technology services.
The Roles of TLT in our Campus Ecosystem
TLT fulfills these obligations by providing exceptional service to faculty, staff and students across all four campuses (Main Campus, Southampton, Manhattan and SUNY Korea).
TLT Collaborations
As the photo above depicts, the TLT units collaborate on a number of shared services, activities and events including:
Annual Teaching & Learning Events
The TLT Spring Colloquium is now eight years strong, bringing together approximately 200 instructional faculty and staff from SBU and across the tri-state region. This event is an all-hands-on faculty development event which could not be accomplished without everyone’s help, within TLT and across DoIT. From speaker selection to post-video production and everything in between, this event is one of TLT’s signature events on campus.
TEDxSBU just completed its 3rd successful year with 280 faculty, staff, students and alumni attending throughout the day. Last year’s event included a faculty talk that was picked up by TED Talks and now boasts over 1M views.
Annual ATC Briefing held each November
New Faculty Orientation held each Fall semester
Online Education Symposium held each Fall semester

Stony Brook Online Learning Development Initiative S-BOLD
In 2014, the President and Provost funded the S-BOLD Initiative with the goals of increasing student success in large gateway courses and improving time to graduation, through the development of online and blended courses. The initiative, created and implemented with direct input from TLT staff awarded $250,000 in its first year to faculty projects involving online learning. TLT staff led the review panels and developed a model for project cost-recovery for services supporting the individual projects (including instructional design, video production and editing, instructional technology support services, multimedia content production and oversaw the building of a light board and one-button studio). Now in Year 2, TLT staff are continuing to support projects from Year 1 and are directly involved in the grant process for Year 2 awards.
