Tencent Animation and Comics

Tencent is one of the most famous and biggest company in China. It’s originally an internet and technology company with it’s QQ, an instant messenger. However, in 2012, Tencent Animation and Comics is independent from the Tencent Entertainment.

If we want to discuss the Animation in China now, we are not going to avoid Tencent animation and Comics. It is the biggest animation and comics platform in China, but the most important thing is that Tencent animation and Comics covers almost every high quality animation and comics in China.

Unlike the Animation companies in Japan or America, Tencent animation and Comics is a super platform not only for Animated Cartoons. When it was found in 2012, TAC is a platform for famous Japan comics, such as “one piece”, “naruto”. From 2014-2015, TAC begins to support superior local comic creators, and starts to make their comics into Animated series. For example, “ai shen qiao ke li”, or “Eors Chocolate”. It published season one in 2015, and season two in 2017.

However, although TAC is publishing a lot of Chinese comics and Animation, it’s business model is not able to copy by others, because Tencent itself is now the biggest platform in China. Every one in China use qq or wechat, which means TAC has a really low cost on promotion. Although it seems like a lot of people are viewing TAC’s product, most of them are not paying for the comics and Animations. It’s costing Tencent a lot of money, and it seems that Tencent haven’t find a way to get it back yet.

Chinese Animation now

In year 2008, an epoch-making animated film is released. It is called Kung-fu Panda.

As we all know, Kung Fu Panda is a great animated film with lots of Chinese elements, and it’s content has a lot to do with Chinese culture. However, it’s not made in China. It is kind of “totally America”. It is product-ed by Dream works animation, it’s directed by Americans, it’s storied by Americans, and it’s screen played by Americans. But, Kung Fu Panda is super famous and successful.

Kung Fu Panda premiered in the United States on June 6, 2008. The film received critical acclaim upon release. Kung Fu Panda opened in 4,114 theaters, grossing $20.3 million on its opening day and $60.2 million on its opening weekend, resulting in the number one position at the box office. (from wikipedia)

Kung Fu Panda’s success is dragging the attention of the Chinese, because they have to face a fact that the Americans produced an animated film that is highly connected with Chinese culture, and they reach a huge success. Mean while, China has almost no animation industries, and everyone hardly believe that China can have attracting animated film or Cartoons. The Kung Fu Panda is giving the Chinese a huge strike: Chinese culture is interesting, Animated film is interesting, but Chinese still can’t create an interesting Animated cartoon or film.

Since Kung Fu Panda has already showed the huge market and the great potential of animated film and cartoons, big companies are finally starting to realize that maybe they have missed a lot of chances.
