Personal Essay

When I was a child, I used to be scared of the dark. I live in a relatively quiet area, and at night the wind would blow the window shades and doors and it would really scare me. I was really paranoid about the dark, especially in hallways and downstairs. These areas are the places I chose to shoot because they were so dark and creepy. I especially hated the front door because as a kid, the door’s windows looked like a face. At night, the lamp post across the street would shine white light through the windows, emphasizing the door’s humanistic facial characteristics. My personal favorite of this series is “Let me in” because it really captures what I imagined the front door to be as a child. When my brother and I were small, we would try to scare to each other at night by popping up randomly; this was my inspiration for “Creatures.” Overall, I really liked how this project came out, it really grasped the scariness, creepiness, and loneliness of the darkness. I did not like being the model/photographer though, because I took multiple shots of each scene while running back and forth to the camera. It was very tiring, but I guess well worth it.
