Professor Viviane Magno Ribeiro talks about the book “The Falling Sky”

On March 2nd, the HUS 254 class had the pleasure to receive Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro’s Professor Viviane Magno Ribeiro to talk about the book “The Falling Sky”, by the Yanomami leader and shaman Davi Kopenawa and Bruce Albert. In her lecture, entitled “Beyond Myth: the indigenous Yanomami narrative in ‘The Falling Sky'”, Professor Ribeiro gave an introduction to the Yanomami people and explained the importance of the book, discussing methodological and epistemological questions for humanities.

Viviane Magno is a professor in the Law Department at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio). She holds a master’s in History and a Ph.D. in Theory of the State. Her doctoral dissertation focused on the struggle for rights in the Radical Enlightenment. She is currently researching the Abolitionist period in Brazil (1860-1870), the writings of the black abolitionist Luiz Gama and 19th century debates around freedom, rights, and citizenship.
