On March 28th, the HUS 254 class had the joy to receive two Brazilian guest speakers to talk about the works of Carolina Maria de Jesus and Conceição Evaristo, two incredible Brazilian authors. In their lecture, entitled “A nation, two literary voices: Carolina Maria de Jesus and Conceicão Evaristo rereading Brazil’s official discourse”, Dr. Raquel Alves dos Santos Nascimento (University of São Paulo, Brazil) presented the life and work of Carolina Maria de Jesus, as well as the reception of her work in Germany, and MA. Jefferson Santos do Socorro (Federal University of Bahia, Brazil) discussed Evaristo’s literary project based on her debut novel Ponciá Vicêncio.

Raquel Alves dos Santos Nascimento
PhD in Translation Studies by the Department of Modern Languages (University of São Paulo), Raquel participated in the doctoral scholarship program at the University of Leipzig in Germany from 2019 to 2020. In 2022, she defended her thesis entitled ” Carolina Maria de Jesus’ Child of the Dark in Germany: same translation, different readings – an analysis based on the paratexts of several editions from the perspective of Corpus Linguistics”. In 2016, also in the Department of Modern Languages at University of São Paulo, she defended her dissertation: “From exoticism to social denunciation: on the reception of Child of the Dark, by Carolina Maria de Jesus, in Germany. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Portuguese and German Languages from the same university. In addition to her research work, she is also active in the field of language teaching and translation. In 2021 and 2022, she taught courses on Carolina Maria de Jesus in the program of the Exhibition “Um Brasil para Brasileiros” (A Brazil for Brazilians) at Instituto Moreira Sales. Still inspired by the author, in 2021 she participated in the publication “Carolinas”, organized by FLUP (Feira Literária das Periferias – RJ – Literary Fair of the Peripheries), and in 2023 she wrote a chapter for the second volume of Traduzindo no Atlântico Negro (Translating in the Black Atlantic). She recently became the mother of little Ayodara.
Jefferson Santos do Socorro
Ph.D. student in Literature and Culture with emphasis on Cultural and Inter-semiotic Translation Studies at the Graduate Program in Literature and Culture (PPGLitCult) at the Federal University of Bahia; and master’s degree from the same course and program. Graduated in Foreign Language – English at the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA). Member of the Translating the Black Atlantic Research Group and of the Literature, Translation, and Semiotics Research Group, both at the Institute of Letters of the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA); he is dedicated to the study of Afro-Brazilian and Afro-American literature, post-colonial and Afrodiaporic literature correlated to the translation of their respective textualities from English into Portuguese, and from Portuguese into English, based on contemporary theoretical studies of translation, blackness, and Afrodiasporicity.
