What We Are Up ToNew medieval aDNA paper in PNAS
We have a new paper out in PNAS led by PhD student Yijie Tian on using ancient DNA to understand the role of elites after the fall of the Roman Empire . You can also check out our Instagram story on the paper.
New penguin population genetics paper out in Molecular Ecology
We have a new paper out in Molecular Ecology led by Rachael Herman on modeling Gentoo penguin range-expansions in Antarctica using whole genome sequencing. You can also check out our Instagram story on the paper.
New Epi-aging paper out in The Journals of Gerontology Series A
We have a new paper out in The Journals of Gerontology, Series A: Biological Sciences and Medical Sciences led by Daisy Zavala from the Scott Lab showing that DNA methylation clocks measuring accelerated biological aging are associated with poor memory and slower processing speed. You can also check out our Instagram story on the paper as well as this SBU news article.
Welcome to the lab Tom and Mariya
As we start the new Fall semester we have two new additions to the lab. Tom Bertino will be starting his PhD, where he will be doing population genetics research of ancient DNA as part of HistoGenes. Mariya Konovalyuk also begins her MA in the department and will be looking into research areas of evolution involving bacterial resistance & diseases, coevolution, and/or neurogenetics. Welcome Tom and Mariya!
New paleogenomics paper out in Current Biology
We have a new paper out in Current Biology led by Deven Vyas and Istvan Koncz on using paleogenomics with archaeology to understand community formation in post-Roman Europe. You can also check out our Instagram story on the paper.

New article on the Genetics of Aging by Natalie Dzikowski
Congrats to Natalie Dzikowski on her article in the Stony Brook Young Investigators Review on The Genetics Of Aging. How Variation and Epigenetics May Facilitate A Long, Healthy Life!
Sarah Vaccaro is URECA researcher of the month
Congratulations Sarah Vaccaro, who has been named the URECA Researcher of the Month for September. Read an interview with Sarah here.
Luiz Machado de Oliveira Junior joins the lab for a rotation
Welcome Luiz Machado de Oliveira Junior, who is a new student in the Genetics program and will do a rotation with us during the Fall 2021 semester. Luiz is interested in understanding how demographic and selective processes shape genetic variation in human populations. In the Veeramah Laboratory he will learn paleogenomic techniques that allow him to compare ancient and modern populations.
