The Power of the Prosthetic Heart

The importance of consistent rhythm within the circulatory system to transport vital constituents, transport wastes, and oxygenate all of the body’s cells cannot be emphasized enough. That is why artificial hearts are proper tools that could enhance the functionality of weak hearts or replace failed hearts altogether. The artificial heart utilizes a hydraulic pump, pumps that use force applied at pressure points through the use of incompressible fluids, to allow blood to get pumped to the lungs to get oxygenated through an artificial ventricle. Once the blood comes back to the heart, the incompressible fluid flows in a way that allows the blood to get pumped throughout the rest of the body. The complex device is powered through a series of batteries and is ultimately controlled by a small electronic device that can monitor the pumping speed of the heart (How Artificial Hearts Work).
