Ian Spriggs creates strong portraits too hyperdetailed to be photographs. Instead he creates by hand as 3d models. In many interviews and tutorials, Spriggs has gone over his process thoroughly, and despite being very modern, there are many techniques used in more traditional art and photography. A strong focus on anatomy, adding personality, and looking to classical art for inspiration all tie his work to traditional media. His lighting setups when broken down mirror those you would find in a studio, making his portraits extremely close to real photographs.

Surprisingly, he emphasizes keeping his textures and materials simple. Only 10 percent of his personal works is technical where the bulk of his work is all creative muscle. Color, composition, and lighting do more to carry his work than the impressiveness of the particle system used to make the hair, or the ray tracing used to simulate subsurface scattering. Conveying emotion and humanity are the core of portrait photographs and Spriggs’ digital work certainly meets those criteria.
