Ian Spriggs creates digital portraits. Portraits taken with a digital SLR camera are technically digital portraits, but in Spriggs’ case, he creates highly realistic digital 3D sculptures believable enough to pass as realistic. The medium is technically complex and on the bleeding edge of what can be achieved with technology, but has a strong foundation in traditional portrait photography. The nature of his digital portraits means that the capture of simulated light rays very closely mirrors that of actual light; consequently, traditional knowledge like lighting ratios, composition, and color theory all still apply in a digital space.
