It is never this easy to archive personal information of someone with the engaging social media. If you want to know more about someone, just simply search he/she on Facebook or Tweets. It sure is convenient, but are there down sides about it? Yes, social media sure is a double-edged sword.
Nothing is private anymore once you published it online. You really should be careful what you say. The article “they loved your G.P.A. then they saw your tweets” by Natasha Singer discussed the issue that nowadays college admission check on social media prior making an admission decision. There is one example giving in the article, that one prospective students posted disparaging comments on Twitter about her fellow attendees during a campus information session, apparently it would not be hard for colleges to keep track of their social media mentions. The college ultimately denied the student admission, considering her academic record wasn’t competitive either.
However, if you really are careful with what you say, the social media can serve as an incredible tool to showcase your accomplishment. As I was editing my online portfolio, I cherish this great opportunity I am having. A decade ago, the generation of our parents wouldn’t even imagine showcasing their professional accomplishment online for thousands of people to review.
