My area of focus within the realm of photography is wildlife photography. I’ve always had a passion and appreciation for nature and animals. However, I have terrible vision. When I first got my camera, I was astounded at how closely I could view the animals in my photos, without disturbing them by getting too close. This is a ubiquitous truth for wildlife photography, I believe. 200+ years ago ecologists and naturalists such as Charles Darwin and Alfred Russell Wallace traveled to unexplored corners of the world studying unknown and exotic creatures and landscapes, which warranted capturing, killing, and preserving these animals to bring them back to Europe for study and display in museums. Since then, our understanding and attitude toward nature has changed fundamentally alongside the widespread of photography, allowing us to view elusive creatures without need to kill or even disturb them. Someday perhaps the need for zoos will be abolished as well, as anyone is able to flip through a National Geographic magazine, or search for images of their favorite animals on Google.
