Aphasia: “When Your Brain Takes Your Words Hostage”

Aphasia is a disorder that is a result of damage to the language center of the brain. It is common in those who had strokes. It causes the person to have difficulty to have trouble reading and/or speaking depending on the type of aphasia. Everyday tasks can become much more difficult. Whether it is reading a sign or trying to talk to friends, things are not the same anymore. Talking to friends is isolating and intimating because you can’t coherently give input into the conversation. This is extremely frustrating for those with aphasia. They retain all their intelligence but they have struggle communicating what they want.
However, there are options that can help them communicate. Practice and therapy can help them regain their communicative and reading capabilities. Also for more severe cases where their capabilities to speak coherently, there are still options. Learning sign language can assist them in returning to conversations again. They could also have cue cards with visuals and words so that they can ask for assistance if need be. If their brains cannot return to what they were before aphasia, those affected by it has a myriad of ways to try to return to communicating again.
