Artist Statement
I am an art major student at Stony Brook University. My concentration is painting and drawing.
My artwork is mostly about landscape and cityscape, which is based on my own photography.
In my drawing, line becomes one of the most essential elements of expression. I am sensitive about the use of line. I try to understand it as an artistic expression first learned as a child. This comes from my fascination with Japanese comic books. This comes from my fascination with Japanese comic books. At that time, I started drawing by reproducing the characters and the battle scenes in these books. Day by day I learned that in conventional manga such as One Piece, Bleach, and Naruto, black, white and grey are the only available colors, so the change of line becomes an important means of expression in these works.
The variation of a line’s thickness and or angularity can build a clear composition, develop contrast, and convey a sense of balance in comic drawings. In my landscape drawings, line works similar to that of manga drawings.
My paintings, on the other hand, are inspired by digital illustrations including cartoons and conceptual art. Unfamiliar with how to paint using digital devices, I tried to work with acrylic paint and create work where the paint lies flat similar to digital art. The process I employ strikes a balance between digitalized and painterly expressions.
