Spread of Fast Food in China

  • China houses American fast food all over the country, not just in the main cities.

  • American fast food first began in expensive areas near offices, universities, and around upscale shopping buildings, giving the appeal of upper-class American culture.

  • Enterprises began to advertise themselves as less foreign and more Chinese by appealing to pop culture and creating Chinese menus. This advertisement began to attract young people and appeal to everyday Chinese citizens.

  • Fast food then began to expand outside of the cities and started building in residential zones, and even closer to rural areas. With the decreased attachment to American ideals and symbolism, American fast food took on its own Chinese culture and started to implement Chinese flavors into the food. This change began the trend of fast food dining in China.

Chinese Fast Food Competitors:

  • To compete with American fast food chains, Chinese enterprises began to open their own restaurant chains in smaller cities.

  • These Chinese restaurants emulate the American fast food experience with a Chinese take, trying to appeal to native-born citizens.

  • Places like Dicos and East Dawning started a little after American fast food entered China and represents McDonald’s and KFC style food in a Chinese way.
